World Spirometry Day 2012

The World Spirometry Day will be held on June 27, 2012.

Due to the impact of World Spirometry Day 2010, the 100,000 tests performed across the globe was a testament to the hard work of individuals, societies and patient organisations who held events; and as announced at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress in Amsterdam at the end of September 2011, the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), in collaboration with the European Lung Foundation (ELF), will coordinate World Spirometry Day once more in 2012.

As the world will be focussing on the Olympics in 2012, the theme of the campaign will be the importance of exercise on lung health. The campaign will attempt to encapsulate all levels of sport and exercise: those who are aspiring to obtain maximum lung capacity to succeed in sport, a COPD patient participating in a pulmonary rehabilitation programme to slow down decline in lung function or an asthmatic child having an improved self-image through exercise.

June 27, 2012, symbolises the launch of the 2-month campaign, which will end at the ERS congress in September next year. Resources will be provided for all those organising testing events related to the Olympic/exercise theme. Participants are encouraged to capitalise on the Olympics and hold events in the run up to the games on July 27 and beyond.

We would therefore like to ask for your support on World Spirometry Day. Your expertise and understanding of patient needs are invaluable to the success of the day. Whether it is a small event or a larger one in a city or town centre we encourage you to work with local healthcare professionals or your national society to make an impact.

We are also looking for athletes – both Olympic and Paralympic or sports men and women who have a respiratory disease - who may be supportive in championing WSD2012 by blogging or writing about their experiences or being available to talk to the media. If you have an existing relationship with a potential WSD2012 champion and are willing to contact them on our behalf, we would appreciate hearing from you as soon as possible.

If you are interested in organising or supporting an event have a look on our website www.WSD2012.european-lung-foundation.org

Please share this information with your colleagues to help us gain support. We hope that thousands of people worldwide will be tested during the event. We look forward to hearing about your plans to run an event and will be available to answer questions (info@europeanlung.org).
